  18. Description of Working Group:
  19. PEM is the outgrowth of work by the Privacy and Security
  20. Research Group (PSRG) of the IRTF.  At the heart of PEM is a set of
  21. procedures for transforming RFC 822 messages in such a fashion as to
  22. provide integrity, data origin authenticity, and optionally,
  23. confidentiality.  PEM may be employed with either symmetric or
  24. asymmetric cryptographic key distribution mechanisms.  Because the
  25. asymmetric (public-key) mechanisms are better suited to the large
  26. scale, heterogeneously administered environment characteristic of the
  27. Internet, to date only those mechanisms have been standardized.  The
  28. standard form adopted by PEM is largely a profile of the CCITT X.509
  29. (Directory Authentication Framework) recommendation.

  31. PEM is defined by a series of documents.  The first in the
  32. series defines the message processing procedures.  The second defines
  33. the public-key certification system adopted for use with PEM.
  34. The third provides definitions and identifiers for various
  35. algorithms used by PEM.  The fourth defines message formats and conventions for
  36. user registration, Certificate Revocation List (CRL) distribution,
  37. etc.  (The first three of these were previously issued as RFCs 1113,
  38. 1114 and 1115.  All documents have been revised and are being issed
  39. first as Internet Drafts.)
